That same year his album earned him a Top New Vocalist award at the ACM’s, 3 GRAMMY award nominations and Platinum certification. Its second single “Brokenheartsville” became his first No. 1 hit making Nichols a hot new artist on the country music scene. Several more songs were released including his 2nd No. 1 hit “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off” and a 3rd No. 1 hit “Gimmie That Girl”.

Nichols spent most of 2004 touring with Alan Jackson and 2005-2006 with Toby Keith garnering more fans and honing his performing skills. More songs and tours would follow and in 2014, Nichols album “Crickets” would garner him another hit single “Yeah” reaching No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart. In 2016 he would release his latest single “Undone” which continues to do well on the music charts.

Country superstar Ronnie Milsap scheduled to appear live on March 18th, 2017.

10/20/16

The Entertainment Department at Harrington Raceway and Casino is proud to announce that legendary country superstar Ronnie Milsap is scheduled to perform at the Exhibit Hall on Saturday, March 18th,  2017, as part of the On Stage – Harrington series line-up.

Known as one of the most popular and influential performers of the 1970’s and 1980’s, Milsap has garnered six Grammy awards, eight gold records, and an astonishing 40 No. 1 hits in his illustrious career. Milsap’s 40 #1 Country hits places him in the top three in that category among country superstars of all-time, only behind Conway Twitty and George Strait.  His countless awards and accolades include induction into the famed Grand Ole Opry in 1976; eight Country Music Association Awards including Entertainer of the Year; four Academy of Country Music awards, including its top honor, the Pioneer Award in 2002; and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014.

Born in 1943 in the small town of Robbinsville, North Carolina, Milsap would grow up being influenced by several genres of music including pop, rock, R&B, gospel and country. The shear love of music would land Milsap learning several instruments and eventually mastering the piano. Throughout those formative years, Milsap would be influenced and inspired by the likes of Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis who he often pays tribute to them in his concerts. It was December of 1972 when he relocated to Nashville after a chance meeting with country music star Charlie Pride. This would prove to be a catalyst for Milsap as he was influenced by Pride to focus on country music and picked up by Pride’s manager who took him under his wing. In 1973, he would record his first hit, “I Hate You”, which would reach No. 10 on the country charts. The following year, Milsap toured as an opening act for Pride and garnered two No. 1 singles: “Pure Love” and “Please Don’t Tell Me How The Story Ends” which won him his first Grammy, and the rest is history.

Hit after hit followed including ”Smokey Mountain Rain,” “(There’s) No Getting Over Me,” “I Wouldn’t Have Missed It For The World,” “Any Day Now,” “Pure Love,” “Lost In The Fifties Tonight,” “Stranger In My House,” “(I’m a) Stand by My Woman Man,” and the incomparable classic “It Was Almost Like A Song,” making Milsap one of the biggest country music stars in history. He continues to be known as a huge inspiration to today’s country artists as well. Blake Shelton, who found inspiration and guidance from Milsap while recording his Red River Blue album, Eric Church, Billy Currington and Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley, to name a few, all have been credited in taking the approach Milsap brought to country music.  Known as the pre-eminent country soul singer of his generation, Milsap continues to captivate sold-out crowds all over the world. In recognition of September being Childhood Cancer Awareness month and the courageous fight of 5-year-old cancer-stricken Layla Mosley, Harrington Raceway has named the 6th race on Wednesday September 14 for this worthwhile cause.

She has been receiving chemotherapy treatments and had surgery in June to remove part of her ribs and a tumor from one of her lungs and ribcage. Mosley is the granddaughter of popular local standardbred horseman Joe Hundertpfund Jr. Horsemen have rallied behind Mosley with fundraising efforts to help fund her healthcare costs.

“The support we’ve received has been outrageous,” said Hunderptfund. “Not just in Delaware, but in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It just shows that the horse racing family comes together when there’s a cause. It makes me proud.”

On Wednesday, Mosley is expected to be in attendance giving out ribbons that celebrate Childhood Cancer Awareness. Mosley is nearing the end of her chemotherapy treatments and the family is hopeful she will remain cancer-free.

I have been on the lower Delaware advisory board for five years and was recently honored when asked to serve on the board of directors. Every nonprofit in the country is facing budgetary challenges and the thousands of dollars in supplies that we collected will be a great help to the house. The donated household items will help families who call the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware their "home away from home" when they have a seriously or chronically ill or injured child in the hospital."  Wal-Mart also played a pivotal role in the event by providing significant resources to transport the donated items.

Harrington Raceway and Casino has hosted similar events for a variety of charitable causes in the past, with the most recent beneficiaries being the Food Bank of Delaware, First State Animal Center and SPCA, and Toys for Tots.

Wishes on Tap fundraiser slated for Nassau Vineyards Aug. 23

08/19/15

The Make-A-Wish foundation is alive and well in southern Delaware and ever since Rehoboth Beach resident Hank Rosenberg was appointed to its board of directors earlier this year, he's taken on the task of raising funds and awareness to grant more wishes for kids battling life-threatening illness in the Cape Region.

As a long-time volunteer wish-granter, Rosenberg said he's using his local connections to increase the visibility of Make-A-Wish locally with the upcoming Wishes On Tap fundraiser at Nassau Valley Vineyards.

This fundraiser, slated to run from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, August 23, offers ticket holders the opportunity to try local wine and craft brews such as Nassau Valley, Dogfish Head and Old Dominion paired with food from event sponsors Nage, Bethany Blues and the Cultured Pearl, among others.

"I volunteer a lot, but my main passion is Make-A-Wish," Rosenberg said. "I've volunteered for them 18 years and, well, Delaware has been overlooked."

His plan to broaden the horizons of his mid-Atlantic chapter of MAW starts with the upcoming fundraiser at Nassau Valley Vineyards, the board member says promises to be a relaxed and friendly afternoon.

"It's just going to be a fun day," he said. "It's a tax deductible, all-all-you-can-eat, all-you-can-drink event to let people know Make-A-Wish is local."

According to the foundation, there are currently more than 600 children in the mid-Atlantic region are awaiting wishes and the average cost to grant a wish is $7,500, Rosenberg said.

Since last September, MAW has granted more than a dozen wishes to children living in Sussex County and has more slated before the end of their fiscal year Aug. 31.

As a volunteer wish granter for 18 years, the board member recalled arranging the logistics of wishes that ranged from trips to Disney World for the entire family and shopping sprees to building custom tree houses and providing computer systems.

"We do everything, we host a wish party and usually get the family a cushion of spending money and pick them up in a limousine," he said.

Monies raised at the Wishes On Tap fundraiser will go toward the fund to grant more wishes locally, Rosenberg said, and he hopes the event will spark collaborations in support of their mission.

"We think there are people down here that we could give wishes to and there's kids who have been approved for wishes, but right now, we just don't have the money to grant every wish right away," Rosenberg said.

For more information about the Wishes On Tap fundraiser for Make-A-Wish, or to buy tickets, go to
www.wishesontapDE.org.

Legendary group Jay and the Americans scheduled to appear live at Harrington Raceway and Casino on April 4th, 2015

03/27/15

The Entertainment Department at Harrington Raceway and Casino announces that iconic pop music group Jay and the Americans are scheduled to perform at the Exhibit Hall on Saturday, April 4th, 2015 as part of the On Stage – Harrington series line-up. Special guests are the popular oldies group The Fabulous Hubcaps.

The 1960’s has always been known as a decade where the music scene changed dramatically. During this time, one of the most popular groups to hit the music scene was Jay and the Americans. Discovered in the late fifties on the New York University campus, the group would go on to receive acclaim for several songs through that decade. In 1962 with Jay Traynor as the leader of the group, they released a tune titled “She Cried” which would be their first major hit going to #5 on the Billboard charts. Several attempts continued after that but they would inevitably not retain the momentum and success that “She Cried” brought in 1962 and Traynor left the group. Faced with having to find a new lead singer, members Sandy Deanne (Yaguda), Howard Kane and new member Marty Sanders would soon replace Traynor with a young promising singer from another group called The Empires named David Black. With the former hit of “She Cried” under the group’s name of Jay and the Americans, Black was convinced to go by the name Jay Black and the group was reborn. They returned shortly after in 1963 with a string of hits that would follow in the next several years including “Only In America”, “Come a Little Bit Closer” in 1963 which would chart at #3 and their endearing hit “Cara Mia” which would go to #4 on the Billboard charts. In 1968, the group recorded an album called “Sands of Time” featuring some of their favorite oldies standards with the single “This Magic Moment” reaching #9 on the Billboard charts. A couple other attempts after did not yield as successful singles and the group started to grow apart and would end up spitting up in 1973 despite their popularity and demand for appearances. The members would go on to having solo music careers and Jay Black continued to tour as Jay and the Americans. In 2006, Jay Black facing personal and financial problems would sell the name and rights back to original member Sandy Deanne (Lagunda) who would bring back together members Howard Kane and Marty Sanders to the group. Back under the name of Jay and the Americans, once again the three were in search of a new lead singer and one who would be able to fill the dynamic voice and legacy that Jay Black brought to the hits. They enlisted Jay Reincke, coincidentally named Jay, to fill Black’s shoes and since have been successfully touring around the world once again recreating the magical sounds of Jay and the Americans. Joining Jay and the Americans are the widely popular oldies group The Fabulous Hubcaps whose fun and entertaining renditions of oldies classics have been a popular attraction for several decades and continue to garner a legion of loyal fans in their own right.

Location – Exhibit Hall/ Tickets are $29/ Showtime: 8pm/ All Ages.

COUNTRY RECORDING ARTISTS PARMALEE TO APPEAR LIVE AT HARRINGTON RACEWAY AND CASINO ON MARCH 21ST, 2015

01/07/15

The Entertainment Department at Harrington Raceway and Casino is proud to announce that the band PARMALEE is scheduled to perform at the Exhibit Hall on Saturday, March 21st, 2015 as part of the On Stage – Harrington series line-up. This new hot group is heralded as one of the latest break-out bands on the country scene. With their latest single, “Close Your Eyes” reaching No. 13 in 2014 on the Country Billboard charts, Parmalee has broken out as one of the latest hot groups on the country music scene. Their latest album “Feels Like Carolina” has garnered critical acclaim following up on their hit “Carolina” which was released on February 4th, 2013 and reached No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart in December 2013.

The journey to Nashville and finding their new found recognition in country music has certainly had its ups and downs for four young guys from North Carolina. When brother’s Matt and Scott Thomas along with their cousin Barry Knox and longtime friend Josh McSwain started the group, no one knew what was going to happen in the years to follow. It was an old barn they called “Studio B” where they practiced in a small two light town called Parmale, North Carolina. After forming the band and deciding to name the band after the town that meant so much to them, they decided to add an extra “e” to the name and Parmalee was formed. Their country rock sound stems from roots in bluegrass, traditional country, southern rock and blues. Although their first EP titled “Daylight” was not a commercial success, it garnered them the attention of a producer from RCA. Two other albums would follow their debut album - “Inside” (2004), “Unplugged” (2006) and “Complicated” (2008). During those years Parmalee spent touring all over the country trying to make their way to Nashville with the recognition they so desperately wanted.

In September of 2010, the band had just performed in a bar in Rock Hill, SC when their path would be severely altered. After packing up their equipment to their RV, two individuals entered the RV with a hand gun and demanded money. At the time, drummer Scott had a gun in the RV and a fight ensued. At the end, one suspect was killed and Scott was shot and wounded and remained in critical condition. By May 2011 through months of perseverance, he was able to bounce back and be on his way to a full recovery. The band persevered on and recorded their hit “Musta Had a Good Time”. The song would lead to several record deals getting them back on a path they dreamed of from their start in that small town of Parmale. In June 2012, the band was featured as a Billboard “Bubbling Under” artist. That same year, Clear Channel named them the “NEW” Artist to watch and on February 4th, 2013, the single “Carolina” was released and went to No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart. Their latest album “Feels Like Carolina” has earned critical praise from People magazine, The New York Times, USA Today, Newsday, Billboard and more. In 2014, they were a semi-finalist for the coveted “New Artist of the Year” by the Academy of Country Music. Appearances on MTV’s O Music Awards and the American Country Awards would cement these four musicians from North Carolina as one of the hottest new bands in Country music today.

Location - Exhibit Hall/ Tickets are $29.00/ Showtime: 8pm/ All Ages.

During the late 1980’s, Chesnutt released his first album, “Doing My Country Thing”, on a private independent label which garnered some notoriety on the local country music scene and started to get him some recognition as an up and coming country artist. Then in 1989 Chesnutt was signed to a well-known country record label and released a single titled “Too Cold at Home” from his second album. This album which was titled “Too Cold at Home” made his national debut on the country music scene and the rest is history. He went on to chart more than 30 singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including 14 No. 1 singles, 23 Top Ten singles, 4 Platinum and 5 Gold Albums. Noted by music critic Robert K. Oermann in the 1990’s, “Mark Chesnutt gave honky-tonk music back its soul”. Mark’s singles were some the decade’s most memorable; from the fun tempo “Bubba Shot the Jukebox” to the emotional ballad “I’ll Think Of Something.” Chesnutt is easily identified for his string of hits including “Blame It On Texas,” “Old Flames Have New Names,” “Old Country,” “It Sure Is Monday,” “Almost Goodbye,” “I Just Wanted You To Know,” “Going Through The Big D,” “It’s A Little Too Late,” “Gonna Get A Life,” and one of his biggest, “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing;” a song that held its position at the top of the charts for four consecutive weeks. He lives to perform on stage. “I just make records because I want people to come see my show,” he says with a grin. That truly personifies this humble and legendary artist and his endearing charm throughout the years.

Joe Diffie was a name synonymous with hits during the 1990’s and continues to write and perform for his allegiance of fans. With 12 No. 1 hits, 13 albums and over 20 Top 10 singles to his credit, this multi-platinum recording artist has cemented himself in country music history. With chart-toppers like “Pickup Man,” “Third Rock From the Sun,” and “John Deere Green,” Joe has little to prove at this point in his career. Other No. 1 hits included “Home” in 1990,” “If The Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets)” 1991, and “Bigger Than the Beatles” in 1995-1996. In addition to Diffie being known for his own recordings, he is a renowned songwriter in his own right with hits for artists like Tim McGraw, Conway Twitty, and Jo Dee Messina to his credit. A proud member of the Grand Ole Opry, Diffie has certainly been a huge part of the country music landscape and continues to perform his incredibly popular hits for his fans. DELAWARE GAMING & INDUSTRY PRESS RELEASE

12/15/10

Majority of Delawareans oppose idea of adding more casinos to the state's saturated gaming landscape

DOVER, Del. - Delaware voters and analysts agree: There's no need to add more casinos to the state of Delaware. A recent statewide poll found that the majority of voters in Delaware oppose expanding the number of gaming locations in the state, while an independent study confirmed that the state's gaming market is saturated and likely to shrink.

Fifty-nine percent of voters in the state of Delaware oppose expanding the number of gaming locations, while 52% agree that three is the right amount. Only 25% favor adding more casinos.

The Delaware Gaming & Racing Industry, including Delaware Park, Dover Downs, Harrington Raceway & Casino, the Delaware Standardbred Owners Association and the Delaware Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, enlisted the services of Deloitte & Touche LLP to analyze the current market in Delaware for gaming and racing. This included assessing the current state of the industry and the potential for future growth. Momentum Analysis also issued a statewide poll and conducted four focus groups concerning the issue.

"There is not sufficient demand within the state of Delaware to support three existing casinos at current levels," reported Deloitte & Touche. "Additionally, there is not sufficient realizable demand to support the casinos … Adding new casino sites in the state will only further cannibalize a decreasing market and add significant pressure to the financial health of the existing casinos."

Momentum Analysis' report mirrored Deloitte & Touche's. "Voters don't see more (casino) locations as a way out of the state's fiscal problems. A majority (54%) find it unlikely that more locations would mean 'the state budget would be balanced.'"
